Many Customers are confused with different types of technology available in Smartboard and always ends up purchasing wrong technology.

There are broadly 4 types of technologies in smart board  (Smart is name of company called Smart technologies which invented Smartboard, Generic word is Interactive white board.

     1)   Resistive technology.

     2)   Electromagnetic technology.

     3)   Infrared technology.

     4)   DVIT technology. (Optical)

1) Working Operation of Resistive technology Interactive board. The Interactive Boards incorporating resistive technology are made with a flexible plastic front sheet and a hard backboard. The back of the flexible sheet and the front of the backboard each have a coating of resistive film. The resistive sides of each are separated by a tiny air gap about the thickness of two human hairs. Pressure applied to the surface of the front sheet closes the gap, registering a contact point that is converted from an analogy signal to a serial data stream and then sent to a computer for further processing. This technology can process contact from a finger, plastic pen or any device.

2) Working Operation of an electromagnetic pen-based interactive whiteboard

An electromagnetic pen-based interactive whiteboard involves an array of wires embedded behind the solid board surface that interacts with a coil in the stylus tip to determine the horizontal and vertical coordinates of the stylus. The pen alters the electrical signals produced by the board. For instance, when close to the surface of the board, the mouse pointer can be sensed, giving the board "mouse-over" capabilities. When it is pressed in against the board in one way, the board activates a switch in the pen to signal a mouse click to the computer; pressed in another way, contact with the board signals a click of the right mouse-button.

3) Working Operation of an IR interactive whiteboard-20 years old technology, A Strip runs across the border of the Smartboard. The Strip Consists of Light emitting elements and Light receiving elements located on the four sides of Interactive board. The assembly creates a grid of Infrared red rays, which are not visible to Human eyes. The Light emitting elements consists of Light Emitting diodes while receiving elements are composed of Phototransistors. The sensor will detect the finger touch locations by recognizing which phototransistor are off.

The emitters and receivers of the IR Interactive board are setup so that they give both horizontal and vertical axis, or more simply a grid. In this example the emitters are on the bottom and right side of Interactive board and receivers are on the top and Left side of Interactive board

The location of this object is then assigned a coordinate, much like an X/Y grid system and relayed back to the screen to be seen as a touch interaction point.

Major Issues with IR Interactive technology.

  • Solid objects or other obstructions can cause occlusion.

  • the IR overlay creates a bezel around the screen.

  • Performance can be affected by extremely bright outdoor light or direct sunlight.

  • accessing the Windows 8 OS charms menu can be difficult because of the bezel

4) Working Operation of an DVIT technology Interactive whiteboard (Premium Optical technology- Patented by Smart technologies Inventor of Smartboard).

DViT belongs in the category of optical detection technologies (like infrared). It is a digital capture system comprised of hardware and software components, using smallhigh quality digital cameras positioned in the corners of a frame that encloses the screen (contrary to IR screens which use IR diodes). When a user touches the active area of the screen (with his finger, a stylus or any other object), cameras locate the contact point (X, Y position) and then transmit this location to the screen software.
